Matters of Faith: Don’t Forget About Me

Rev. J. Loren Russell, BA, MDiv

Daniel 41:12 – 13 (NKJV)

“Now there was a young Hebrew man with us there, a servant of the captain of the guard. And we told him, and he interpreted our dreams for us; to each man he interpreted according to his own dream. And it came to pass, just as he interpreted for us, so it happened. He restored me to my office, and he hanged him.”

We have all had times in our lives when we felt abandoned, like nobody appreciated what we have done or what we are doing. There is no question that it is a terrible feeling. Nobody likes being dejected, rejected, or abandoned. That is exactly what Joseph must have felt when he was thrown into a pit and sold into slavery by his brothers or thrown into jail for a false allegation of rape by his employer’s wife, or forgotten by his jail mate, the chief butler, despite having asked to be remembered when it was well with him.

Joseph was forgotten at every turn. His life was heading in the wrong direction even though he had done nothing to deserve it. He loved his brothers, served his employer faithfully, and interpreted the dreams of his jail mates, but all of them abandoned him at critical moments.

There came a time when everyone in the Pharoah’s employ were challenged to interpret the king’s dream. No one was able to do it. Pharoah’s butler remembered a young Hebrew man in prison with him who accurately interpreted his dream. He told him that he was going to be restored to his position as the chief butler and the baker hanged. He recommended Joseph to Pharoah.

Joseph not only accurately interpreted Pharoah’s dream, but at the age of 30 was promoted to a position subject only to Pharoah himself. Of this young man, Pharoah said, “Inasmuch as God has shown you all this, there is no one as discerning and wise as you. You shall be over my house, and all my people shall be ruled according to your word; only in regard to the throne will I be greater than you…, I have set you over all the land of Egypt” (41:39-41).

If you ever get to the point where it seems everyone has forgotten you, reflect on Joseph. While people disregarded, ignored, rejected, and abandoned him, God never forgot him. Joseph’s faithfulness was ever in His remembrance. In His time (Kairos), He bought those faithful moments to the minds of one of those who disregarded, ignored, rejected, and abandoned him. If you have ever said, “Don’t forget about me,” I want you to know that what God did for Joseph through the chief butler He will do for you. The Lord has not forgotten about you.

Be Blessed!
