Speaker Heastie Statement on Minimum Wage Increase

The Assembly Majority believes that putting families first means that every hardworking New Yorker is able to earn a meaningful wage to achieve financial independence and support their families.

That is why in 2016, we fought tirelessly to enact legislation that would establish a meaningful plan for sustainable growth in New York’s minimum wage.

As part of the 2016-17 Enacted Budget, the first in a series of wage increases took effect on December 31, 2016 and gradually phased in over the last six years. The next wage increase will take place on December 31, 2021, and while this is great news for workers we know there are still inequities that need to be addressed.

Our fight to improve the lives of hardworking New Yorkers is far from over. In the upcoming legislative session, we will look for additional ways to grow our economy and make a difference in the lives of New Yorkers.
