Happy New Year!

Happy New Years from The Bronx River Alliance family! We are hoping that everyone stayed safe and enjoyed time with their loved ones.

Throughout the past month we have highlighted some of our special community members who have helped to make an impact on the Bronx River for our giving season.

There is still time now to make a contribution so that we can expand on our volunteer program going into this new year. When you give you ensure that The Bronx River remains a healthy and vibrant resource for the community along it. Get involved now!

Seen on the River

The Ever-Changing Landscape

Alternate text

The Bronx River looks a little different now than it did a few months ago. Thanks to several past flooding events past (especially the flooding caused by Hurricane Ida), parts of the Bronx River have physically changed shape. One example is at Muskrat Cove, where our trash boom is located. Flood waters scoured the riverbanks and redistributed sediment, changing the shape of the channel and creating a new patch of dry land on what used to be the riverbed.

Project WASTE events will probably look a little different now because of this! Natural rivers will always change shape over time. Although urban planners have tried to force the landscape into different shapes, nature will always find a way to remind us of its power. As climate change causes an increase in flooding, we can expect to see more changes in the future.

For more information on the impacts of flooding on the Bronx River or to share examples of physical changes to the watershed that you have seen this year, please email our Ecology Team at Christian.murphy@bronxriver.org.
