Cut The Cable: Save $$$ And Still Watch TV? – Part II

Post by Columnist Anthony Rivieccio

Well, after two weeks ago writing an article (Part 1) encouraging and sharing with you FREE internet sites to watch your: News, TV shows , Sports and Movies (of which makes up today’s TV); NOW, ESPN, HBO & CBS have announced that they will have by 2015- a stand alone internet channel- which can be paid my monthly subscription.

Now, while we still advocate for FREE TV, one can now see “a la carte” Cable pricing in the next couple of years, which could really cut prices , maybe as much as 50-70% , depending on your TV consumption.

So for example, if the 3 channels above let’s say are the only ones you really watch- then this is your 2015 monthly stand alone internet TV billing!

*ESPN- $20 a month
*HBO- $10 a month
*CBS- $5 a month

Now, for $35 a month for “internet TV” you think the Cable TV guys, like Cablevision, Time Warner & Comcast are not nervous?

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) produces their wrestling show “Monday Night RAW” on Cable TV. 1.8 million viewers watch it. Several months ago, they debut their “internet TV” channel, WWE Network at $10 a month. 800,000 viewers have signed on.

No, not today, BUT, at current numbers, in 5 to 8 years, the WWE can tell Cable TV goodbye!

Now, will it get rid of the FREE internet sites that are out there now (ex- Hulu- for TV shows-)? In 8 years, YES!

So, as people (I’m included) who believe in consumer “frugal” based personal finance, do we just allow to wait for the next 5 years, and let the free market lower TV entertainment prices and accept them and move on, knowing we can be saving as much as 50% more a month.

Or , as we said in Part 1, if you have a solid internet connection and don’t mind a “5 second lag”, should you change your consumption tastes to “internet tv” knowing that you can get your : News, TV shows, Movies &Sports for FREE?

Like the latter! We do too!
