Civil Rights Committee to Hear Brewer/Vacca Bill Protecting Interns from Harassment

On Monday, March 17th, the City Council’s Committee on Civil Rights, chaired by Council Member Darlene Mealy, will hold a hearing to discuss legislation introduced by Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and Council Member James Vacca which would amend the City’s Civil Rights laws to protect interns from discrimination and harassment in the workplace.

This legislation was initially prompted by the case of Lihuan Wang, a 26-year-old intern who said her boss grabbed her inappropriately and attempted to kiss her in 2010. Wang’s lawsuit was eventually dismissed because of a lapse in the law which does not allow interns to sue their employers for harassment because they are not paid employees, and thus are not protected under the law.

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, representatives from the New York City Commission on Human Rights, intern rights advocates, employment law practitioners and members of the business community are expected to testify.
