Assemblyman Benedetto Towing Legislation

Assemblyman Michael R. Benedetto (82nd AD) is holding a press conference on Friday, May 23rd, at 11a.m. outside E. T. Laundromat at 3492 East Tremont Avenue to call for new state legislation to regulate the car-towing policies presently being employed by property owners of strip malls.
“While property owners and tenants of adjoining strip malls fight it out over limited parking, the general public is being victimized by the for-hire towing companies contracted by the property owners, who act with total impunity as they grab a car they allege is abusing the strip mall’s parking policy. The vehicle owner has no recourse once the car is towed except to pay the steep towing fee to retrieve the vehicle. The tow truck driver, in essence, is the judge, jury and executioner in determining the validity of the alleged abuse”, said Assemblyman Benedetto.
” I will be introducing legislation in the state Assembly to curb these towing abuses. When adjoining strip malls share common walkways and driveways it’s not the public’s responsibility to understand the property ownership issue.” Benedetto added.
Victims of such abuses will be available to relate their stories.
