Council Member Cohen to Bring a Skate Park to Norwood’s Williamsbridge Oval

Council Member Andrew Cohen announced today that he will be using $750,000 of capital funds for the construction of a skate park in the Norwood section of The Bronx.andycohenskatepark

This project has been a request of Community Board 7 and Norwood residents for quite some time. Ten years ago several teenagers had sought the creation of a skate park at this site and unfortunately other priorities at the park forced it to be sidelined,” said Council Member Andrew Cohen. “After Community Board 7 unanimously voted in support of the creation of a skateboard area, I knew that it was an initiative that needed my support.

Bronx Borough Parks Commissioner Hector Aponte had these words:“NYC Parks is appreciative to Council Member Cohen for allocating $750,000 toward the construction of a new skate park at Williamsbridge Oval Park,” Aponte said.  “This worthy investment will ensure the creation of a new recreational amenity for the youth of our community.  Special thanks to Council Member Cohen for his continued advocacy on behalf of parks and public spaces throughout his district.”
Community members were thrilled about the news.

“As Council Member Andrew Cohen was an advocate for Parks before he ran for City Council, I was not surprised when he came out in support of the skate park project. I am very pleased that he included funding for an area for our skateboarders, as this activity certainly improves both physical and mental health,” said Douglas Condit Jr, a member of the Friends of the Williamsbridge Oval.Local skateboarder Richard Carrera, 15, described the plan as “awesome.”

I’m glad to see that there is a Council Member that supports us skaters, that he supports us skateboarding in a healthy and safe environment. Best of all, it nice to see that Council Member Cohen supports our freedom to have fun,” said Carrera.
