STATEMENT FROM COUNCIL MEMBER ANDY KING AND BRONX BP DIAZ REGARDING CITY MEDICAL EXAMINER’S OFFICE ANNOUNCEMENT ON DEATH OF ERIC GARNER

AndyKingupkrally3-8-14“In the wake of the New York City Medical Examiner’s office announcement, which ruled Eric Garner’s death a homicide, it’s clear that the NYPD and the legal system have a responsibility to hold those persons responsible for Mr. Garner’s death fully accountable. There’s no hymning and hawing. This is a serious matter that must be addressed by our legal system and the offenders must be punished to the full scope of the law,” said Council Member Andy King, co-chair of the Black, Latino and Asian Caucus.

sotb12Diaztakesstage“Today’s news, confirming that it was indeed a chokehold that caused the death of Eric Garner, is incredibly sad. This tragedy has shaken an entire city, and my thoughts and prayers remain with Mr. Garner’s family during this troubling time. The people of this city demand justice, and it is incumbent upon the Staten Island district attorney to conduct an open and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr. Garner’s death and proceed accordingly. As our city works to heal from this awful incident, we can demand no less. As I have said in the past, no one should be a victim of police brutality,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. on Friday afternoon.

And from the desk of the Mayor:

“On behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend my deepest sympathies to the family of Eric Garner, on this day we have received the Medical Examiner’s findings concerning the cause of his death. My administration will continue to work with all involved authorities, including the Richmond County District Attorney, to ensure a fair and justified outcome.

“We all have a responsibility to work together to heal the wounds from decades of mistrust and create a culture where the police department and the communities they protect respect each other-and that’s a responsibility that Commissioner Bratton and I take very seriously. I’ve said that we would make change, and we will. As Mayor, I remain absolutely committed to ensuring that the proper reforms are enacted to ensure that this won’t happen again.

“I’d also like to thank the Office of Chief Medical Examiner for conducting a thorough and expeditious review of the cause of death in this tragic incident.” — Mayor Bill De Blasio

“Eric Garner’s death was a tragedy and I would like to again extend my deepest sympathy to his family at this difficult time.   While today we know more about the reasons for his death, we are all too aware that no facts or actions can bring him back.  When tragedies occur, they are a wakeup call that we simply cannot continue with the status quo.  This is an important time for all of us to come together and find the common ground that unites us as a city.  We can, and must, do better.”–Comptroller Scott Stringer
