Abuse of Animals in The Name of Religion?

The abusive ritual of Kapparot.

Jews all over the world are now recognizing the close of the New Year’s celebration, and the start of Yom Kippur, which is celebrated in many different ways across many communities. Many ultra-Orthodox here in the US partake in a controversial, abusive and hideous ritual called KAPPAROT just prior to the holy day of Yom Kippur.

This ritual, which to many has been historically controversial due to it’s being in direct conflict with what many consider the spirit of Judaism, involves swinging a chicken over their heads to symbolize the transfer of one’s sins to the animal, and then slaughtering it. Most Rabbis do not condone this practice, and in fact denounce it.

I personally feel it is contrary to what G-D said about a responsibility we have to protect animals. I truly believe we need to work to put an end to this.

In recognition of Yom Kippur, I will be be starting a 25 hour fast tonight to tomorrow night.  I will refrain from responding to emails, calls, or texts.

Do you have any comments? Always, feel free to submit them, and I will respond after my fast.
