NYC Council Member Andy King Statement on the Grand Jury Decision in the Eric Garner Case

Today, Council Member Andy King (D- The Bronx), Co-Chair of the Black, Latino and Asian Caucus, released this statement following the decision by a grand jury to not indict Police Officer Daniel Pantaleo in the death of Eric Garner:

“I am upset and outraged by today’s decision not to indict Daniel Pantaleo.  As a father, husband, New Yorker, and a black man, today’s decision not to indict revealed to me that black lives don’t matter.  We are in a society where we come in all shades and hues, and we put our trust in the judicial system and law enforcement, which are tasked with serving us and protecting us.  Every time that those wearing shields violate that trust of service to protect, there is no accountability.

“This must stop, this has to stop, and the Department of Justice must step in when locals cannot serve their civic duties fairly to make sure that justice is served.  Justice must be served for the citizens of New York.   Justice must be served for the citizens of Ferguson, Missouri.  We must promote and deliver justice for all Americans.

“My condolences and prayers go out to the Garner family during this trying holiday season. The fight for justice will continue.”
