New York State Senator Jeff Klein

“NEWS and Upcoming EVENTS”

Dear Friend & Neighbor,

This past week I introduced my 2015 policy agenda, Invest New York – a comprehensive 15 point plan to lift up all New Yorkers and create a strong, sustainable economy for generations to come. My new plan includes smart investments in our children’s schools, bringing good-paying jobs home to the Bronx and Westchester, and expanding access and affordability to middle-class housing.

And that’s just the start. Like years past, I am committed to improving the lives of the many, not just the few – that’s why I’ve also made raising the minimum wage, paid family leave, student debt relief, senior support programs and important property tax credits for New York’s working families the foundation of my 2015 agenda. When I’m up in Albany, I’m working for you – I’m fighting hard  for the New York worker, the New York student, the New York family and the New York senior.

As always, I would love to hear from you. Don’t hesitate to reach out to my district office at (718) 822-2049 should you need any assistance or have any questions. Our upcoming events are posted below. Come join us! I hope to see you soon.

New Legislation Creates Equal Priority System for All Homeless New Yorkers

LOWER MANHATTAN – In December, I was proud to introduce new legislation with my colleague Assemblyman Luis Sepúlveda and stand with Councilman Ritchie Torres to call for equal access and equal priority for victims of domestic violence within the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) system. This year, I will work with my partners in Albany to pass this important piece of legislation and reform a system that has been unfair and outdated for far too long.

Klein, Diaz, Bronx Chamber of Commerce Honor First Graduates of Bronx H.I.R.E. Survivors Program

THE BRONX – It was my pleasure last November to honor the first class of women enrolled in the Bronx H.I.R.E. Domestic Violence Survivors Program. Together with Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. and the Bronx Chamber of Commerce, we celebrated the graduation of these talented woman and I look forward to working with them to secure permanent, good-paying jobs within the community.

Spotlight: Bronx H.I.R.E. Survivors Program

Last fall, I introduced the Bronx H.I.RE. Survivors program, together with Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr., to pair domestic violence victims with jobs. The two-part program includes a six-week job training course, as well as a six-week paid internship program geared toward increasing job readiness and preparing survivors for the workplace.

On Monday, January 12th, participants in the program started their internships at small business and government offices across the Bronx, including my office, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr.’s office, Councilman Ritchie Torres’ office, the Bronx Chamber of Commerce, the Westchester Square B.I.D. and Teddy Nissan.

The Bronx H.I.R.E. Survivors program is the first of its kind in the community and plays a significant role in creating a bridge to employment for victims of abuse who have felt disconnected, or unable to find work. It’s opportunities and initiatives like this one that are empowering women, providing them with essential skills, and ultimately, connecting survivors with real jobs that will lead to financial independence and future success.
