Memorial Day Woodlawn Flagging

Bronx, NY  The Woodlawn Cemetery is hosting an event at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 15 to kick off its annual Memorial Day flagging of veterans’ graves.

A brief ceremony, with remarks from local elected officials, will welcome and acknowledge the over 200 volunteers that will be coming to the cemetery over the course of the following two weekends to place a U.S. flag at the gravesites of over 5,200 veterans of our armed forces.

The ceremony will take place at the Veterans’ Memorial, just inside the gates of The Woodlawn Cemetery, beside the administration office at the Webster Avenue entrance.

Each year, Woodlawn honors the patriots who have served our country. Members of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard are all represented at Woodlawn, from as far back as the Civil War.

Within Woodlawn’s gates is the gravesite of Admiral David Glasgow Farragut. His gravesite was designated a National Historic Landmark.

This site commemorates the career of the nation’s first Admiral, best known for his battle cry, “Damn the Torpedoes, Full Speed Ahead.” The Woodlawn Cemetery is located at Webster Avenue and East 233rd St. in Bronx, NY.
