SAT, AUGUST 15   FAMILY ART PROJECT: GREEN BUGS GATHERINGWave Hill Family Art Project Green Bugs Gathering

Study the similarities and differences between cicadas, katydids and crickets. Then, use cardboard tubes, fasteners, wooden clothes pins and green tempera paint to construct bodies and movable parts, like wings and legs. Learn how to make cicada castanets and other buggy sounds and click, chirp or sing in an insect parade. Free, and admission to the grounds is free until noon. Wings over Wave Hill event.

Quiet like a mountain, moving like a river, Tai Chi is a sequence of gentle movements based on images found in nature. In this beginner-level class, Irving Yee, a member of the William CC Chen Tai Chi School, introduces students to the internal martial arts and promotes an awareness of its benefits. Session fee: $25/$15 Wave Hill Member. Advance registration online receives a $2 discount. Online registration closes at 8AM on the day of the session. Cancellations must be made by 3PM the Friday before; after that, refunds will not be made. Drop-ins will be accommodated as the limited space permits. Participants must present their Membership card or a printed program registration form at the front gate.

SUN, AUGUST 15    CRICKETS, KATYDIDS AND CICADAS WALKcrickets katydids and cicadas

Insects may be tiny, but their activity enlivens the garden with color, sound and movement. This summer, tag along with our visiting naturalists as they hunt for creatures that soar and sing above Wave Hill. Each special weekend begins with an insect-themed Family Art Project in the morning and continues with a nature walk in the afternoon. During the dog days of summer, crickets, katydids and cicadas fill the air with their multitude of unusual songs. Watch naturalist Paul Keim use a sweep net to collect these creatures, and learn to distinguish their many different songs from one another. Children ages 10 and older welcome with an adult. This event is free with admission to the grounds, but. Since space is limited, registration is recommended, online at wavehill.org or onsite at the Perkins Visitor Center. Wings over Wave Hill event.

Join the Curatorial Fellow for a tour of current exhibitions. In the main gallery, Seven Deadly Sins: Wrath–Force of Nature explores contemporary anxieties about the environment through painterly and sculptural depictions of natural disasters and their aftermath. The Sunroom Project Space hosts two site-specific installations: Holly Veselka transforms the Sunroom into interplanetary space, printing antiquated images onto fabrics to create sculptural objects. For the Sun Porch, aricoco makes outfits representing an insect’s life cycle in an environment resembling a carnivorous garden. Tours take place Tuesdays and Saturdays at 2PM. Free with admission to the grounds.

Each week, Wave Hill educators share some of their favorite nature tales. These stories—classics and more—come to life through interactive readings, sing-alongs and puppetry. This week, meet a very grumpy goat, a pig who says “ribbit” and a little bird who thinks an airplane might just be her mother. Laugh along with these comedic tales, and then join in as we sing some of our favorite nonsense songs. This week we read Are You My Mother! by P. D. Eastman, Grumpy Goat by Brett Helquist and Ribbit! by Rodrigo Folgueira. Programs are held outdoors in good weather; in Wave Hill House in inclement weather. Ideal for children ages three to six with an adult.Free with admission to the grounds.

Study these ancient insects and see them flying upwards and downwards, backwards and forwards, or hovering mid-air. Create delicate and shimmering dragonfly wings using transparent and brightly colored—even metallic—materials. Free, and admission to the grounds is free until noon. Wings over Wave Hill event.

Environmental educators from the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum offer a short, indoor presentation, then lead a family-friendly walk to net and identify some of these iridescent insects for a close-up look before they are released back to nature. Each week, Wave Hill educators share some of their favorite nature tales. These stories—classics and more—come to life through interactive readings, sing-alongs and puppetry. All gardens bloom first in the imagination of their gardeners. This week, tour three fantastical landscapes: a salamander room, a flowering railway and a garden planted with chocolate bunnies and jelly-bean trees. Our reading selection this week: My Garden by Kevin Henkes, The Curious Garden by Peter Brown and The Salamander Room by Anne Mazer. Programs are held outdoors in good weather; in Wave Hill House in inclement weather. Ideal for children ages three to six with an adult. Free with admission to the grounds.

A 28-acre public garden and cultural center overlooking the Hudson River  and Palisades, Wave Hill’s mission is to celebrate the artistry and legacy of its gardens and landscape, to preserve its magnificent views, and to explore human connections to the natural world through programs in horticulture, education and the arts.

 

HOURS  Open all year, Tuesday through Sunday and many major holidays: 9AM5:30PM. Closes 4:30PM, November 1–March 14.

ADMISSION  $8 adults, $4 students and seniors 65+, $2 children 6–18. Free Saturday and Tuesday mornings until noon. Free to Wave Hill Members and children under 6.

Limited onsite parking is available for $8 per vehicle. Free offsite parking is available nearby with continuous, complimentary shuttle service to and from the offsite lot and our front gate.
