Study the similarities and differences between cicadas, katydids and crickets. Then, use cardboard tubes, fasteners, wooden clothes pins and green tempera paint to construct bodies and movable parts, like wings and legs. Quiet like a mountain, moving like a river, Tai Chi is a sequence of gentle movements based on images found in nature. In this beginner-level class, Irving Yee, a member of the William CC Chen Tai Chi School, introduces students to the internal martial arts and promotes an awareness of its benefits. Session fee: $25/$15 Wave Hill Member. Advance registration online receives a $2 discount. Online registration closes at 8AM on the day of the session. Discover the fascinating history of Wave Hill’s architecture and landscape on a walk with a Wave Hill Garden Guide. Hear about those who once called Wave Hill home, among them Mark Twain, Theodore Roosevelt, Bashford Dean and Arturo Toscanini. Free, and admission to the grounds is free until noon.

Insects may be tiny, but their activity enlivens the garden with color, sound and movement. This summer, tag along with our visiting naturalists as they hunt for creatures that soar and sing above Wave Hill. Each special weekend begins with an insect-themed Family Art Project in the morning and continues with a nature walk in the afternoon. During the dog days of summer, crickets, katydids and cicadas fill the air with their multitude of unusual songs. Watch naturalist Paul Keim use a sweep net to collect these creatures, and learn to distinguish their many different songs from one another. Children ages 10 and older welcome with an adult. In the main gallery, Seven Deadly Sins: Wrath–Force of Nature explores contemporary anxieties about the environment through painterly and sculptural depictions of natural disasters and their aftermath. The Sunroom Project Space hosts two site-specific installations: Holly Veselka transforms the Sunroom into interplanetary space, printing antiquated images onto fabrics to create sculptural objects. For the Sun Porch, aricoco makes outfits representing an insect’s life cycle in an environment resembling a carnivorous garden. Tours take place Tuesdays and Saturdays at 2PM. Each week, Wave Hill educators share some of their favorite nature tales. These stories—classics and more—come to life through interactive readings, sing-alongs and puppetry. This week, meet a very grumpy goat, a pig who says “ribbit” and a little bird who thinks an airplane might just be her mother. Laugh along with these comedic tales, and then join in as we sing some of our favorite nonsense songs. This week we read Are You My Mother! by P. D. Eastman, Grumpy Goat by Brett Helquist and Ribbit! by Rodrigo Folgueira. Programs are held outdoors in good weather; in Wave Hill House in inclement weather.
