 NYU East New York 2015
NYU Students Volunteer with NYC Parks at Annual Event!
On August 31 and September 1, NYC Parks and New York University collaborated for a fourth annual street tree project in East New York. NYC Parks staff, MillionTreesNYC Care Captains, and NYU student leaders led about 1400 NYU freshmen to care for over 1800 street trees in East New York. Volunteers removed weeds and litter, and mulched the tree beds, while engaging the community and spreading the word about the tree care movement.

IN PARKS!
Upcoming Volunteer Project
Alley Pond Park trails
Help NYC Parks restore forest in Alley Pond Park! Trails provide access to the forest, but too many trails can confuse visitors and disrupt the ecology of the forest. Volunteers will help close unnecessary trails and formalize official trails through the southern woods. Registration is required.

 Plants You Need to Know
Purple Loosestrife

 Purple Loosestrife

Purple loosestrife is an invasive wetland herbacious plant. Its key features are its purple flowers, a square, woody stem, and opposite or whorled leaves. Despite its seemingly harmless appearance it threatens NYC’s native wetland habitats. It can outcompete and replace native grasses, sedges, and other flowering plants; which prove more supportive of native wildlife.
