On Saturday morning, residents of the Pelham Grand, staff, community advisory council members, and community joined with The NYC Department of Parks and Recreation in a My Parks Project along the Pelham Parkway Greenway.

Volunteers cleaned from the front of the Pelham Grand to Burr Avenue. Approximately 20 bags of litter was picked up. Much of the litter appeared to have been thrown from cars exiting the highway. It is hoped that next time there is a community clean up there will be much less than 20 bags of litter.

Perhaps it is time for the NYPD and the Department of Parks to enforce anti-littering laws and to apprehend those who continuously litter our community. Community residents who observe anybody litter, be it from a car or while walking in our community, should video tape it or take a pictures for the NYPD. Even if the resident does not want to involve the NYPD, they can use post the video evidence and embarrass the perpetrator.

Ciara Gannon, Bronx Outreach Coordinator for NYC Department of Parks and Recreation’s Partnership for Parks said, “ASCNYC and residents of the Pelham Grand hosted a successful It’s My Park Project along the Pelham Parkway Greenway. It was an absolute pleasure planning and working on this project. It is always great to see community members taking ownership and becoming stewards of their greensapces. Partnership for Parks looks forward to a continued relationship and hopefully another project next month.”

Partnerships for Parks is a joint project of NYC Department of Parks and City Parks Foundation. Possible projects for the next few months include another clean up, planting bushes and trees; beautifying the greenway in other ways. The City Parks foundation looks forward to continued work with The Pelham Grand and the Pelham Bay community in its efforts to take back park land of all sizes and have it under community control.

“Today was a special day for all of us at the Pelham Grand. We worked together to make the green space what it should be–a clean and welcoming mini-park for the whole neighborhood.” said Jill Clockadae, Associate Director of ASCNYC.

As fall and then winter approach the Pelham Bay west communty can look forward to fun and enjoyment on the greenway thanks to residents of the Pelham Gran and the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation.
