The New York Mets celebrated an 8-3 win over the Cubs in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series on Wednesday at Wrigley Field, capping the first four-game sweep of a postseason series in franchise history. In doing so, they won their fifth NL pennant and reached their first World Series since 2000.

The Mets’ final act in reaching this dream was a nine-inning demonstration of their might at Wrigley Field. Lucas Duda hit a three-run home run off Jason Hammel in the first inning and a two-run double off Travis Wood in the second, giving the Mets a 6-0 lead that they never came close to relinquishing. Steven Matz allowed one run into the fifth, Bartolo Colon bridged the middle innings and Jeurys Familia finished off the Cubs. Then the Mets poured out of their dugout to celebrate the franchise’s first NL pennant in 15 years.

Murphy hits record homer, wins NLCS MVP

Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy became the first player to go deep in six consecutive postseason games. Murphy hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning of his team’s 8-3 victory in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series (NLCS).

Murphy’s seventh home run of the postseason and sixth in successive games, broke a record that was set by Carlos Beltran when he played for the Astros in 2004. The streak spans the last two games of the Mets five-game victory over the Dodgers in the NL Division Series and all four games of the NLCS.

“You get so excited when you’re able to come together and accomplish something like this,” NLCS MVP Daniel Murphy said.

Congratulations pour in

Andrew Cuomo was the first political leader to issue a statement praising the New Yorks Mets, who hail from his home borough of Queens. “As a Queens native, I couldn’t be prouder that my hometown team is bound for the World Series. On behalf of all New Yorkers, I congratulate Manager Terry Collins and the entire Mets organization on this tremendous accomplishment.”

Up next for the Mets is the winner of the American League Championship Series between the Royals and Blue Jays.

Cuomo expressed confidence that the Mets will “go all the way” to win the MLB World Series. The World Series begins on Tuesday night in either Toronto or Kansas City (on FOX).
