The Jacobi NICU Celebrates Halloween

Everybody loves Halloween – and the tiniest members of the Jacobi Medical Center family are no exception! With the help of Kimberly Campbell-Taylor, RN and NICU Supervisor/Educator, 24 babies celebrated the holiday dressed as adorable characters, including Rapunzel, Minnie and Mickey Mouse, Strawberry Shortcake, Pumpkin Patch, Big Bird, Candy Corn, Donatello and Raphael from Ninja Turtles, and Elsa and Anna from Frozen.

Campbell-Taylor has been up until midnight nearly every night since September 1, busily knitting her custom creations. “Holidays are joyous celebrations,” she says, “but it’s hard to celebrate when your baby is ill. In the NICU, we don’t always have good news for parents. Giving them a chance to smile and laugh means so much to us.”

Campbell-Taylor speaks from personal experience. She was once the mom of a “28-weeker” – her son Isaiah, who is now a healthy, happy 17-year old high school student. “I have seen the NICU through the eyes of our parents,” she explains, “I understand how they feel.”

“Kim’s clinical expertise and technological savvy in caring for the specialized needs of our patients is superior,” says Amy Reichlin, NICU MD, “but she also remembers to write “love-notes” to parents from their babies, taping them onto the incubators before the parents arrive. It is her keen emotional support that helps to make the NICU a real family.”
