NYCHA Employees Teamsters Local 237 Endorse of Keith Wright for Congress

Teamsters Local 237 represents over half of all New York City Housing Authority employees. These workers are critical to maintaining the largest public housing authority in the United States, ensuring that nearly half a million residents have safe and reliable homes. Today these workers stand with Keith Wright in his bid to represent the 13th Congressional District. The congressional district has one of the highest concentrations of public housing units in the nation.

“I am proud to stand with Keith Wright because he has always stood up for Teamsters Local 237”, said President Greg Floyd. “In Congress, Keith will be the voice New York needs in the fight to protect public housing and good paying jobs”.

About 1 in 12 New Yorkers live in New York City Housing Authority. As Assembly Housing Chairman, Wright has led the fight in Albany to increase funding to maintain and improve the quality of public housing for half of million New York residents.

This announcement comes off the heels of the powerful Teamsters Joint Council 16 endorsement. Collectively, the Teamsters represent 120,000 workers across Downstate New York. The Teamsters join a substantial and growing group of leaders and organizations backing the candidate, citing Wright’s experience, capability and an unwavering commitment to the people of upper Manhattan and the Bronx.

“Having the support of the Teamsters reassures to me that the work I do each day in the community to get people into good jobs, that the wars I wage in Albany while demanding funding for programs that help get our residents back on their feet, are right for New Yorkers. The Teamsters represent a diverse coalition of workers that is a true reflection of today’s New York. Local 237 represents NYCHA employees, city attorneys, health care workers, peace officers Department of Education employees, to name a few. I’m elated to have their endorsement and look forward to continuing our collective fight in this new chapter” said Wright.

This week, Assemblyman Guillermo Linares and two-time contender State Senator Adriano Espaillat formally announced their entry into the congressional contest to represent NY-13, which is currently represented by Rep. Charles B. Rangel, encompasses the neighborhoods of Harlem, Inwood, Marble Hill, East Harlem, Washington Heights, Morningside Heights, Fordham, Kingsbridge, Norwood and parts of the Upper West Side.

The Teamsters join Governor David Paterson, Mayor David Dinkins, Assemblyman Denny Farrell, the Unified Firefighters Association and others in their support of Wright.
