About Us

BAAD!

The Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance is a Bronx-based presenting organization and theatre which creates, produces, presents and supports the development of challenging works in dance and all artistic disciplines that are empowering to women, Latinos and people of color and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender community and are created by emerging, evolving and established artists.

BAAD!  is home to Arthur Aviles Typical Theatre and the Bronx Dance Coalition.

TODAY IS

BAAD!

‘S BIRTHDAY!!!

On December 11, 1998, Arthur, Charles and a band of supporters including Arthur’s dancers, community members like Mrs. Ross, Charles’ mother, Maria, and Majora Carter, the folks at the Point (Paul, Mildred, Steve and Maria) and men from GMoB – Gay Men of the Bronx cleared space in the American Banknote Building to create a performance area for Arthur Aviles Typical Theatre.  It was called the Quinceañero Concert because it was celebrating Arthur’s 15 years of being a dancer (see post card promoting the show below). There was no heat, broken windows covered by aluminum foil, but lots of love, art and people – three of the essential seeds used to plant BAAD!
THANKS to the many people who have come to our shows, to the artists who have helped us create a movement and space for women, people of color and queer people to create together, to all the board members who have helped us build BAAD!, the leaders who have stepped up, the funders and foundations who help keep our doors open and all the hundreds of individual donors who believe in our work.
Tonight we will celebrate!  There is a performance of Los Nutcrackers at 8pm, followed by birthday cake and champagne.  Come see the show or come after and shake your groove thing.
Also, you can help us keep it going with a donation.  Sprinkle something our way because large or small, it all helps BAAD! Grow. Click Happy Birthday BAAD!

On behalf of Arthur, Charles, the board of directors – Marion Dienstag, Reginald Bullock, Jr., Kelly McGowan, Frances Lugo, Barbara Berliner and Elizabeth “Macha” Marrero, and everyone at BAAD!
