We Stay/Nos Quedamos, Bronx Chronicle and Others Are Hosting 17th CO Candidates Forum, 1/27

BRONX, NY — Nos Quedamos, Bronx Chronicle, Bronxnet and other community organizations are sponsoring a 17 City Council District Candidates Forum on Wednesday, January 27 at Pregones Theater (575 Walton Avenue), 5:30 – 9:00 PM. Due to the venue’s limited seated capacity, the forum will be a ticketed event. Interested attendees can reserve tickets by clicking here.

The forum moderator will be Erin Clarke, NY1 News Bronx Correspondent. The panel of local journalists will include: Madeline Anthony, Bronx Times Reporter; Michelle Centeno, National Women’s Political Caucus; and Steven Lynn, The Bronx Chronicle.

The forum moderator and guest panelists will seek to elicit responses from candidates on community challenges related to Community Development and Land Use, as well as  Housing, preservation and affordability  Rezoning and the threat to community sustainability  Environmental Justice  Open Space  Supportive services and shelters.

We Stay_Nos Quedamos-LOGOJessica Clemente, President and CEO of We Stay/Nos Quedamos, cited the short time frame from Council Member Maria del Carmen Arroyo’s resignation announcement and the February 23rd special election as possibly limiting the community’s participation as voters. “We are coordinating this forum to ensure the community is aware of this special election, and ultimately able to fully participate both in hearing from the candidates and demonstrate that our local residents care by voting in significant numbers,” said Clemente.

Organizers are hoping to organize viewing parties at various locations throughout the 17th Council District to encourage community engagement. All eleven candidates, elected officials, Bronx Young Democrats, other community stakeholders are being urged to coordinate viewing parties.
