(Bronx, NY – January 20, 2016) – Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announces that defendantRONALD DeJESUS PLAZA was sentenced today in absentia following his conviction  for Assault in the 1stDegree (2 counts, Class B Felony).

The 25-year-old PLAZA was sentenced by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Efrain Alvarado to 10 years in prison followed by five years post-release supervision.

In June 2014, PLAZA attacked a stranger who had just emerged from a nightclub on Aqueduct Avenue in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx.  Plaza not only punched his victim in the face and broke his nose, but also slashed him numerous times in the face as one other unapprehended man held the victim and stabbed him in the back multiple times.   The victim suffered injuries that required nearly two dozen stitches and staples to his face and head.

RONALD PLAZA turned himself in to police eleven days later.

After a two-week-long jury trial, closing arguments were delivered on Thursday, December 3rd, 2015.  The next day RONALD PLAZA failed to show up in court, while the jury was given its instructions and began deliberations.  A bench warrant was issued for his arrest.

At some point over the weekend, PLAZA posted to an Instagram account a photo of a highly rated and expensive rum, with a message directed at the Assistant D.A. prosecuting the case: “Salute Mr. Miller, this is a good rum.”

The jury rendered its verdict on Monday, December 7th.

PLAZA, who lives in Westchester, also has an open arrest warrant in that county for failing to appear before a court on an attempted murder case.

The case against Ronald Plaza was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Karl Miller and Assistant District Attorney Joseph Rivera of the Bronx D.A. Trial Bureau 30/40.
