SUN, MARCH 13    WINTER WORKSPACE WORKSHOP: BUILD INFLATABLE ART Each winter, Wave Hill opens Glyndor Gallery as workspace for New York-area artists, giving them the unique opportunity to explore the winter landscape as a source of inspiration. Artists share aspects of their practice with the public through hands-on workshops. Workshops begin in Glyndor Gallery with an introduction to the artist’s work, then continue in the Ecology Building or Wave Hill House for the creative activity. During the Winter Workspace, Chad Stayrook continues his exploratory narrative video series, creating four short videos that respond to “place” featuring an interplanetary explorer who can only survive in cold winter weather. In his workshop, learn to build sculptures as big as your house with materials you can find in your closet, as Stayrook teaches a technique to bind plastic sheets (garbage bags) together with the use of wax paper and an iron. Each participant will work on his or her own unique shape. At the end, the group will combine all the forms into one giant sculpture that is inflated with a simple fan. Visitors aged 12 and over are welcome with an adult. Newcomers and practicing artists alike are welcome. $25/$15 Wave Hill Members, includes admission to the grounds. Trained as a painter and textile designer, she has long been experimenting with the unexpected at Avant Gardens, a nationally known mail-order nursery and garden design/build firm in Dartmouth, MA. This is the last of Wave Hill’s three 2016 Horticultural Lectures, a winter series hosted by the Friends of Horticulture Committee and devoted to the subject of garden design and the meaning of our interactions with plants and the natural world. This year’s series has been generously underwritten by Sarah Peter. They are held at the New York School of Interior Design. Individual tickets: $25/$20 Wave Hill Member or student.
