“The Divine One,” Sarah Vaughan was anAmerican jazz contralto with a vast range whoworked as a soloist for much of her career. Asa child, Vaughan studied piano and organ andbegan singing in her church choir. As ateenager, she won the famous amateurcontest at Harlem’s Apollo Theater and wasfeatured with bandleader Earl Hines.
