Guyana’s Golden Jubilee Celebration

 

 

On May 25, 2016, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., in partnership with The Guyana Independence Committee, hosted the Inaugural Bronx Guyanese Day Celebration in honor of Guyana’s 50th Anniversary of Independence at Lotus Flame Restaurant.

 

“This is an exciting time to recognize the people of Guyana during the 50th Anniversary of their Independence as well acknowledging the growing Guyanese population,” said Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “With over 300, 000 foreign-born Guyanese in the United States; over 140, 000 residing in New York City and more than 14, 000 calling The Bronx home, it is a proud moment to host a day dedicated to the Guyanese people.”

 

Honorees included Inspector Steven Griffith, NYPD, Commanding Officer, Community Affairs Bureau, Community Outreach Division; Salvina Vanessa Baijnauth, Ridgewood Savings Bank, Small Business Specialist; and Indroutie Lutchman, Cohn and Wolfe Public Relations, Billing Financial Analyst.

 

Rhonda Binda, Executive Director, Jamaica Business Improvement District and Vice Chair of the 50th Anniversary of Guyana’s Independence Celebration in New York and Imran A. Ahmad of Queens Public Television (QPTV) served as the emcees for the event talking about their background and memories of their home land.

 

“This is history in our amazing borough. The Inaugural Bronx Guyanese Day festivities clearly shows that our Borough President is working with the diverse communities to create opportunities for all groups of people,” said Bharati S. Kemraj, a spokeswoman for Diaz’s office and proud Guyanese. “This event is a testament to all that our people have done and continue to do.”

 

The Co-operative Republic of Guyana gained independence from Great Britain on May 26th, 1966. In respect to individuals celebrating with family and friends the Golden Jubilee Anniversary in The Bronx was hosted a day early. The 2016 festivities included music, dancing, singing, poems and traditional Guyanese style cuisine and drinks for everyone to enjoy.

 

“As a twenty-two year veteran of the NYPD, I have moved through the ranks, working at each level to stay connected with the community and I am honored to be recognized during the 50th Anniversary of Independence of Guyana by The Bronx Borough President,” said Inspector Steven Griffith, Commanding Officer, Community Affairs Bureau, Community Outreach Division, NYPD. “As a Guyanese-American, I experienced the best of both worlds and my conjoint upbringing was rich in culture, structure and love; exposure to the ideologies of the “American dream” and all the opportunities and liberties that go with it, enabled me to be the man I am today,” added the Inspector.
