Senator Klein Secures Needed Funding for Pedestrian Safety Improvements

Standing alongside Mayor of Mount Vernon Richard Thomas, Senator Jeff Klein recently announced $56,958 in state funding he successfully fought for that will go a long way towards giving families the assurance of a safe commute along the busy business corridor of Fleetwood. The money will fund a long-awaited capital project that will dramatically improve pedestrian and transportation safety as well as beautify the streetscape, bringing new life to the area. The project, which targets the streets surrounding the Fleetwood Metro-North Station, will include numerous improvements including new pedestrian countdown crosswalk signals, standing yield and stop signs, more crosswalks as well as refurbished existing ones and decorative lighting poles. The announcement preceded an extensive tour Senator Klein and Mayor Thomas took to get a first hand look of the planned projects area and was led by Mike Justino, President of the Fleetwood Neighborhood Association, who has been a tireless champion of addressing quality-of-life issues throughout this section of Mount Vernon. It is widely expected that by improving traffic safety for our pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike, this project will also aid the local businesses as the area will become more friendly to shoppers on foot, encouraging everyone to frequent the Fleetwoods many shops.
