Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club endorsed Democrat Amanda Farias for City Council in the Bronx’s 18th Council District.

Insurgent Democrat Amanda C. Farias announced on Monday that her campaign filed over 3,000 designating petitions for the 18th City Council District. Farias filed 7 times as many signatures than the 450 minimum required by the City Charter to qualify for the September 12 Democratic Primary election ballot.

“I am proud of the work our campaign did with the petition process and I am excited about continuing to talk with voters about my vision for a brighter future for District 18,” said Ms.Farias.

In her statement, Farias claimed district residents are tired of seeing other areas of the Bronx and throughout this city prosper while our area remains stagnant due to a lack of vision and initiative from local elected officials who only care about themselves and not the people they represent. Faras asserted that she is running to make government work in such a way that communities actually see their quality of life improve with safe ,clean streets, reliable transportation, housing that’s actually affordable, and high performing public schools where every child has a chance to go to college.

State Sen. Rev. Ruben Diaz, Elvin Garcia, Michael Beltzer, Constantine Eisley, William Moore, John Perez, and Green Party candidate Carl Lundgren round out the crowded field of candidates seeking to succeed Councilwoman Annabel Palma, who is term-limited.

Informed sources say that the Bronx Democratic party organization filed petition volumes for its slate of Council candidates incumbents Rafael Salamanca, Vanessa Gibson, Fernando Cabrera, Andy Cohen and Andy King as well as Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj and State Sen. Rubén Diaz Sr., and its civil court candidate, Fidel Gomez.

Amanda Farias has the endorsements of the National Organization for Women NYC, Council Members Elizabeth Crowley and Helen Rosenthal, Vote Pro Choice, Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club and the Filipino American Democratic Club of New York.

CORRECTION: Signature requirement for City Council was corrected to reflect that a 2010 City Charter change and 2013 legal decision lowered the requirement from 900 to 450.
