Statement on POTUS Decision on Transgendered Individuals to Serve in the Military: Assemblyman Victor Pichardo

Statement on POTUS’ decision on trans individuals to serve in the military

President Trump’s decision to ban transgender individuals from serving in the U.S. military goes against everything our nation stands for. It’s a step backward that sends the wrong message; we should be setting an example that discrimination of any kind is unacceptable, not undoing progress we’ve already made.

A person’s gender identity or expression should never stand in the way of being able to serve in the military, secure housing, receive an education or get a job. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. I helped pass the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) in the Assembly earlier this year, marking its 10th consecutive passage in the house, because I will not stand for discrimination of any kind.

I stand with transgender and gender nonconforming individuals across this state and country. I’ll continue fighting to protect the rights of all New Yorkers and protect the ideals and values we hold dear from a hostile federal government.
