Senator Klein Honors Veterans for Valentines Day

This year marked the 23rd Annual Valentines for Veterans Celebration hosted by Senator Jeff Klein at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center, just one way the local elected official has shown his appreciation for and honor the sacred debt of those who have selflessly served in the armed forces.

The long-anticipated affair allows Senator Klein to connect the older generation to the younger one within the community in order to foster strong bonds and allow children to learn from real life heroes with lifetimes of achievements. A record nineteen local Bronx schools participated by bundling over 500 gift bags, wrapped boxes and valentines cards that were distributed to veterans as they enjoyed the festivities.

This year’s celebration was kicked off by the Color Guard of SUNY Maritime and featured appearances from Miss New York Teen Asia Hickman, Miss Bronx Li Ling Rivera, and New York Knicks Alum and Olympian Charles Smith, who each received a proclamation from Senator Klein. Assemblyman Michael Benedetto and Erik Langhoff, MD, PhD and Darlene Mulero of the James J. Peters VA Medical Center were also in attendance.

Entertainment was provided by the P.S. 105 Rock Band as well as the P.S. 83 Choir. The Icahn Charter School 2 even performed a step dance act thanks in part to the Project BOOST (Building Options and Opportunities for Students) funding Senator Klein secured in the past which have gone towards cultural and academic enrichment programs in the past.
