Chairman Crowley Statement on Deportation of Nazi Prison Guard Living in Queens

(Queens, NY) – Congressman Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement on the deportation of Nazi prison guard Jakiw Palij, who had been living in Jackson Heights, Queens since 2001:

“Today marks a solemn victory for the Queens community, who has, for years, demanded this justice for victims of the Holocaust and their families. Jackson Heights is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in America, and the presence of a former Nazi guard in the heart of our neighborhood violated our most cherished values of love, equality, and acceptance.

“For years, I’ve been working with my fellow members of the New York Congressional Delegation to urge the State Department and Department of Homeland Security to deport this war criminal and I appreciate the German government’s willingness to accept his deportation. This process dragged on for far too long, but today, our Jewish neighbors, and all proud Americans, can rest assured that our nation took a stand against hate.”
