Senator Rivera On Start of Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s Confirmation Hearing to the U.S. Supreme Court

SENATOR RIVERA ON START OF JUDGE BRETT KAVANAUGH’S CONFIRMATION HEARING TO THE U.S. SUPREME COURT

“With Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing starting today, it is impossible to ignore the outrageous lack of transparency and extreme partisanship of this nomination process. As Senator Patrick Leahy, a 44-year veteran of the Senate, stated today, this has been one of the most incomplete Supreme Court nomination hearings in recent memory, with the majority of Judge Kavanaugh’s White House records still not available to the public.

Despite this disgraceful veil of secrecy, we are fully aware of Judge Kavanaugh’s questionable judicial record. It largely demonstrates that he will not hold back in supporting the Trump administration’s anti-immigrant, anti-Latino, anti-worker, anti-choice, anti-LGBT, and anti-affordable healthcare agenda, which would mean devastating consequences for millions of American families. Further, we must not forget Trump’s well-documented pronouncements that he would only appoint judges who will vote to overturn Roe v. Wade and dismantle the Affordable Care Act.

I call on the 49 members of the Senate Democratic Caucus to stand firmly against this nomination and delay these hearings at all costs. This process has been incredibly tainted and, since this is a lifetime appointment, it must be transparent and fair. I urge every American to call their Senator at (202) 224-3121 and express their opposition to Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation. The future of our democracy is at stake.”
