After weeks of hinting that he was considering a run to replace retiring South Bronx Rep. José Serrano, Councilman Rev. Ruben Diaz, Sr. made it official Saturday afternoon at his annual New York Hispanic Clergy Organization gala at Maestro’s.

Before a crowd of 600-plus people at the New York Hispanic Clergy Organization gala benefit, Councilman Rev. Ruben Diaz Sr. announced his candidacy for the 15th Congressional District in 2020. Diaz’s announcement ends weeks of speculation since Rep. Jose Serrano announced that the has Parkinson’s disease and wouldn’t be seeking re-election in 2020.

 

He distributed a fundraising letter in Spanish among his guests, who cheered upon hearing the news Diaz was running for Congress. In the letter, Diaz said that he turns 76 on April 22 and has decided to toss his cowboy into the ring to run for Congress in the South Bronx’s 15th congressional district. He also encouraged a campaign donation as a birthday gift.
