Bronx DA: Bronx Man Sentenced To 17 Years in Prison for Fatally Stabbing His Live-In Girlfriend

BRONX MAN SENTENCED TO 17 YEARS IN PRISON FOR FATALLY STABBING HIS LIVE-IN GIRLFRIEND, CRITICALLY WOUNDING HER

9-YEAR-OLD GRANDDAUGHTER

 

Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark today announced that a Bronx man has beensentenced to 17 years in prison for Manslaughter and Attempted Murder for stabbing his live-in girlfriend to death and critically wounding her nine-year-old granddaughter.

 

 

District Attorney Clark said, “The defendant mercilessly stabbed the victim and her young grandchild in the Bronx apartment they shared. We hope the sentence he received today will help the deceased victim’s family to heal, especially the brave, resilient young girl who survived and recovered from the horrific attack.”

 

 

District Attorney Clark said the defendant, Henry Maldonado, 58, of 700 East 156 Street, wassentenced today to 17 years in prison for first-degree Manslaughter and 10 years for second-degree Attempted Murder, to run concurrently, by Bronx Supreme Court Justice James McCarty. Maldonado pleaded guilty to the charges on January 7, 2019.

 

According to the investigation, on May 11, 2016, the defendant caused the death of Carmen Irizarry, 60, by stabbing her multiple times about the body with a knife. The victim died at the scene. The defendant also stabbed the victim’s nine-year-old granddaughter. The child sustained injuries to her leg and back but managed to escape. After the stabbings, the defendant started a fire in the apartment, locked himself in, and refused to let police and firefighters inside. As part of the plea deal, the Arson charge was dismissed.

 

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Felicity Lung, Homicide Counsel,under the supervision of Christine Scaccia, Chief of the Homicide Bureau, and the overallsupervision of James Brennan, Deputy Chief of the Trial Division, and Theresa Gottlieb, Chief of theTrial Division. District Attorney Clark thanked her Crime Victims Assistance Unit, and NYPDDetective Javier Cordero of the 40th Precinct and Detective Peter Cullen, formerly of Bronx Homicide.
