Middle and high school students from the Schermerhorn and Van Cleve programs at the New York Institute for Special Education, who are visually impaired and emotionally challenged, proudly received their diplomas during a commencement ceremony celebrating their success’, on Wednesday, June 19.
Louis M. Tutt, Past Executive Director of the Association for the Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired, served as the keynote speaker. The student address was delivered by senior graduate, RamilHirsawa, who is attending Brooklyn College.
NYISE Executive Director, Dr. Bernadette Kappen, delivered opening remarks during the ceremony, which was followed by the keynote; awards presentations; performances by the NYISE chorus;and the presentation of diplomas. Graduates of the senior class will be attending colleges in the area such as Hostos Community College, Queens College, Brooklyn College and Bronx Community College. A graduating senior, Kevin Figueroa, has received a full scholarship to the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
The New York Institute for Special Education, founded in 1831 as The New York Institution for the Blind, is one of the oldest and most respected schools in the nation that provides specialized services for children with disabilities. Located in the Bronx since 1924, NYISE provides quality programs for more than 300 students from New York City’s five boroughs, Westchester County and upstate New York, including more than 120 children from the Bronx, ages 3 to 5, who attend its preschool.
