COUNCIL MEMBER FERNANDO PRAISES MAYOR’S OFFICE PARTNERSHIP WITH OPEN SOCIETY FOUNDATION EMERGENCY RELIEF FUND FOR IMMIGRANTS, ANSWER TO SYSTEMIC EXCLUSION FROM COVID-19 STIMULUS

Bronx, NY – Today Council Member Fernando Cabrera issued the following statement:

“The partnership between the Mayor’s Office and the Open Society Foundation is a model for cities nationwide who value the lives and contributions of their immigrant populations.   Immigrants with unsettled status are many of the ‘essential workers’ who keep our offices clean, care for our sick and elderly, cook our food in restaurants, work without protections on construction jobs, and do so many hard and dangerous jobs that put their lives at risk.  This partnership is the answer to the systematic exclusion of immigrants from the COVID-19 stimulus benefits that have been appropriated by Congress, by providing a one-time emergency relief payment.  While it won’t be enough to lift families out of poverty, it sends an important message to people that they matter to us, their lives matter to us, and we value their contributions.  They are not forgotten.”

Council Member Cabrera is available for interviews.
