COUNCIL MEMBER FERNANDO CABRERA REITERATES WARNING ON SCHOOL REOPENINGS, CALLS FOR DOE PLANNING WITH UFT AND CSA

Bronx, NY – In response to 24 New York City teachers testing positive for COVID-19 across all five boroughs after returning to schools, Bronx Council Member Fernando Cabrera today reiterated his earlier warning that the DOE must carefully plan with UFT before re-opening schools.  “I’m saying again, the DOE must engage in careful planning with the UFT and CSA before we can open our schools.  Having 24 teachers across the city testing positive for COVID-19 after returning to school buildings is a dire warning sign.  As I have said previously, the DOE needs to also look at alternative spaces for holding classes, such as houses of worship and community centers.  Too much is at stake for teachers, kids and their families.  This is a dangerous situation that must be thoroughly addressed.”

Council Member Cabrera is available for interviews.
