COUNCIL MEMBER FERNANDO CABRERA CALLS FOR MORE GUN SAFETY AWARENESS AFTER CHILD SUFFERS SELF-INFLICTED GUN SHOT TO HEAD

Bronx, NY- Today New York City Council Member and Majority Whip Fernando Cabrera called for stronger gun safety awareness efforts for registered weapons.

“Today an eight-year-old child accidentally shot himself in the head with a gun he found in his family’s apartment and was rushed to the hospital. My heart is breaking for this child and his family,” said Cabrera. “We now know the gun was legally registered, but the results are tragic for this child and his family.  Anyone with a legal, registered firearm must strictly adhere to safety measures, especially if there are children in the home.  If you have a legal gun in your home, it should be locked and unloaded.  Keep ammunition in a separate location and make sure children and teenagers cannot access the location with keys or combinations to safes.  If you are in possession of an illegal firearm, I’m asking you to surrender it to your local NYPD precinct.  New York State law allows people who illegally possess a firearm to surrender it to law enforcement without being prosecuted.

“I’m grateful to NYPD 52nd Precinct and EMS, FDNY for their fast and effective response to this unfortunate event.  I’m praying for the child and his family.”
