COUNCIL MEMBER FERNANDO CABRERA CALLS FOR INCREASE IN ACCESS TO MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES IN RESPONSE TO CONTINUING RISE IN SUBWAY VIOLENCE, NYPD AND DOHMH TO WORK TOGETHER

Bronx, NY- The wave of violent subway crime, over recent months including riders being pushed onto the tracks and multiple stabbings, has left both riders and transit employees shaken.

“Violent subway crime of all types has increased for many reasons. Our current crime numbers are higher than the past two years even, with fewer riders.  While the increase in NYPD officers deployed to our subways is necessary, it is only part of the solution.  As a pastor, mental health professional, and a member of the City Council’s Public Safety and Mental Health Committees, I’m calling for the Department of Health and Mental Health to conduct on-the-ground outreach letting people know help is available and how to get it- for themselves sand loved ones- and for DOHMH and NYPD to work together to develop effective joint responses to incidents that have mental health implications.  The fear, anxiety, sadness, and despair resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic is real and disproportionately affects those who were already experiencing mental health challenges.  NYPD and DOHMH together can keep New Yorkers safer and help people who need help to get it.”
