Summer is sumptuous–and so are this week’s programs: family art-making, yoga under the summer sky, birding and the next in our “Lessons from Wave Hill” workshops, which offer the opportunity to learn from one of our gardeners. This time it’s all about container displays, wonderful for a garden, of course, but also a balcony or terrace. Read on for all the details!

Family Art Project: Teeny Tiny Things to See (On-site)

Family Art Project: Teeny Tiny Things to See – Wave Hill

Get lost in the teeny tiny details found in plants, water and soil through microscopy photography. Layer felt, drawings and ephemera to create soft sculptures that help make the invisible worlds visible. Questions? Please email us at information@wavehill.org or call 718.549.3200 x251. The number of families able to participate at any given time will be limited to about five. If you arrive and capacity is full, program staff will provide a “come back” card so you will have first entry for the next session. Shine only. Check the website starting at 8AM morning of, for the status of the day’s program. Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather and to work with natural materials. Have your masks on when you arrive! And please be prepared to respect physical distancing throughout your stay. Summer Birding – Wave Hill

Join a morning bird walk with our naturalists and seasoned birding guides Gabriel Willow and Paul Keim. Explore the gardens and woodlands to look for birds that are attracted by Wave Hill’s diversity of habitats. Birders of all levels welcome. Ages 10 and older welcome with an adult. Yoga in the Gardens – Wave Hill

Root your feet in the grass and look out upon the vistas as you enjoy a gentle yoga class with certified yoga instructor Susie Caramanica. Enjoy the gardens as the setting for your yoga practice as your find your breath and connect to the landscape. All levels welcome. Please bring a mat and be on time. This class is shine only. Garden Highlights Walk – Wave Hill

Join a knowledgeable Wave Hill Garden Guide on a tour of favorite garden areas and summer highlights. Severe weather cancels. Walks do not include the Conservatory at this time. This walk ends at 2:45PM. Garden Highlight Walks are most appropriate for adults or young adults. Not intended for groups; maximum 5 people allowed to register together. Lessons from Wave Hill: Seasonal Container Displays – Wave Hill

Container plants play an important role in the seasonal displays at Wave Hill. Every summer, the gardens are filled with hundreds of potted plants enjoying a summer vacation from our indoor growing areas, together with seasonal containers planted with tropical and annual plants. Wave Hill Gardener Shane Pritchett has perfected the art of container gardening at the Pergola and on Wave Hill House’s Kate French Terrace, arranging a myriad of planted containers that highlight shape, height, texture and color. In this workshop, his shares his container-gardening expertise, including soil mixes, care requirements, design considerations and recommended plant species for sunny and shady locations. Please note that Wave Hill is not open to the public on Mondays; participants are invited to bring their lunch to enjoy on the Kate French Terrace but will not be allowed to wander the grounds.
