This program is held in conjunction with Eco-Urgency: Now or Never, an exhibition organized by Wave Hill in partnership with Lehman College Art Gallery. Together with Steven Conaway, Wave Hill’s Assistant Director of Horticulture, and Jack Henning, Lehman College faculty, Biological Science, join us for a guided walk led by exhibition artists SPURSE, a creative design consultancy that focuses on social, ecological and ethical transformation. Members of SPURSE will demonstrate how to use their app to explore aspects of the local urban environment. Topics include identifying plants for foraging and overcoming plant blindness, caring for our local waterways, creating awareness of environmental personhood and more. Rain location: Glyndor Gallery. View the comings and goings at a respectful distance, while beekeeper Junior Schouten explains exactly what is happening inside. Questions welcomed! Rain cancels. Join a knowledgeable Wave Hill Garden Guide on a tour of favorite garden areas and fall highlights. Severe weather cancels. This walk ends at 2:45PM. Garden Highlight Walks are most appropriate for adults or young adults. Not intended for groups; maximum five people allowed to register together. Garden Highlight Walks follow a variety of routes along mixed-material pathways and varying elevations. Accessible routes are available as requested; please indicate your need to the Wave Hill staff at the Greeter Desk in the Perkins Visitor Center.

In the fall, Wave Hill’s gardens are enlivened with the dazzling blooms and colorful foliage of tender perennials. After a full season’s growth the plants are large—but the greenhouses don’t stretch! Wave Hill’s gardeners ensure the longevity of our tender perennial collection by harvesting and rooting cuttings every autumn, overwintering them in the greenhouses as modest-sized plants. Working alongside Wave Hill Gardener Gelene Scarborough, participants gain a greater knowledge of how to propagate plants using cuttings, and the confidence to overwinter and increase plants from their own gardens. This workshop focuses on salvia and coleus, but these techniques can be applied to many other plant species. Each participant goes home with a sampling of prepared cuttings of salvia and coleus. In order to ensure the survival of these cuttings through the winter, participants will need a grow light at home.
