In the Still Moments!

Psalm 46:10 NKJV

“Be still and know that I am God.”‬‬‬‬

My dear cousin Carolyn posted this scripture to her Facebook page with the label, “Carolyn’s Bible verse for 2024.” It got me thinking about what happens in those still quiet moments that we spend silently with the Lord. When the noise of the world is quieted, the voice of God can be heard.

Throughout the Bible, people were told to be still. Habakkuk 2:20 tells its readers that the Lord is in His holy temple, and all should be silent before Him. Zachariah 2:13 encourages his readers to be silent because the Lord is moved to action in His holy dwelling place. Moses was told to stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, that those who were pursuing his people would be seen no more (Exodus 14:13). He was also told to tell his people to stand still so that he could hear from the Lord (Numbers 9:8). Job was told to stand still and consider the wondrous works of God (Job 37:14), and in the book of Acts, an Ethiopian eunuch was baptized in an unknown body of water when he commanded his chariot to stop (acts 8:38-39). In each of these Biblical accounts, it was the still of the moment that ushered in God’s perfect will.

When the noise of the world is quieted, the voice of God can be heard. It is in the still moments that the Lord speaks the loudest and his voice is most distinctive.

Note that the same letters found in the word silent can be used to spell the word listen. An anagram is here used to teach us that the most effective listening is done in silence. To clearly hear the Lord speak, we must silence everything, especially the conversations in our head that tells us we don’t need God.

To keep silent, to stand still, to be in the still moment when the Lord speaks should be the goal of everyone who wants to be and have everything the Lord intended for them. We must learn to be still in that moment and know that the Lord is God!

Be Blessed!
