Cuomo will get the power to preside at weddings

In a last, last minute development, Governor Andrew Cuomo has requested the power to marry people.

People familiar with his push note that Cuomo has received several requests to solemnize gay weddings since 2011, when he signed a law legalizing same-sex marriages in New York. Melissa DeRosa, Cuomo’s director of communications, did not say if he has any plans to officiate at specific events.

Presently, state law permits judges and mayors to officiate at weddings.

The new law will be included in the omnibus legislative package, known as “The Big Ugly,” which will be voted on later today.
