The Revenant Tops US and Global Weekend Box Offices

LOS ANGELES, CA — The Revenant topped weekend movie box offices domestically and worldwide. ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ held on to number two spot, ‘Ride Along 2’ fell out of last week’s number one spot domestically to number three over the weekend.

The winter snowstorm that dumped nearly three feet of snow on northeastern U.S. cities forced many movie theaters to close on Saturday.

Rentrak’s Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian commented, “Fox’s ‘The Revenant’ proves it’s a force to be reckoned with as the multiple Oscar® nominee and Golden Globe® winner takes the world by storm with $49.8 million this weekend and sets its sights on the quarter billion dollar threshold in the worldwide arena in the coming week.”

Meanwhile, Disney’s ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ has the $2 billion club within reach with $1.94 billion grossed through this weekend.
