Columbus Day Celebrated in Morris Park
by David Greene
Despite a persistent drizzle that could not dampen spirits of Italian-Americans, hundreds turned out to enjoy the 41st Annual Bronx Columbus Day Parade down Morris Park Avenue. Shop owners pulled tables outside to capitalize on the additional foot traffic. Though crowds to the annual parade have dwindled in recent year’s, but this year one would be hard pressed to find a spectator holding an Italian flag, possibly due to the recent backlash from critics of Christopher Columbus, who call him a conqueror and are calling for a removal of his statues along with Confederate war figures. Vandals have recently poured red paint of the iconic statue in Manhattan and a statue of Columbus was beheaded in Yonkers.
