In an email to supporters and a series of tweets, Governor Andrew Cuomo today announced legislation to remove all firearms from those persons who commit any domestic violence crimes. Cuomo declared on Twiter : “Given the inextricable link between domestic violence and lethal gun violence, this legislation will require all domestic violence crime convictions, including misdemeanors, to result in the immediate removal of all firearms.”

Cuomo also tied in the tragedy of mass shootings and the present “reckoning” surrounding the “cultural and institutional harassment of women.”

In his email to supporters, Cuomo wrote:

“After a year of deadly mass shootings, and given the clear connection between domestic violence and gun violence, it is our moral obligation to do everything we can to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. That is why today I am announcing legislation to automatically remove all firearms from those who commit any domestic violence crime.

“This common sense measure will keep guns away from those who have been convicted of violent behavior and will help make New York a safer state for all. But the NRA and their allies will do everything they can to stop it from becoming law.

“In nine of the 10 deadliest mass shootings in United States history, including Las Vegas and Sutherland Springs, the shooter had an existing record of committing violence against women, threatening violence against women, or harassing or disparaging women. Given this link between domestic violence and gun violence, our legislation will require all domestic violence crime convictions, including misdemeanors, to result in the immediate surrender of all firearms.

“New York has some of the strongest gun control laws in the nation. But the law currently doesn’t do enough to stop convicted perpetrators of domestic violence from killing. This legislation changes that.”

Governor Cuomo ends the email by asking New Yorkers to become citizen co-sponsors of the legislation by adding their names to an online petition to remove firearms from domestic abusers. The link connects to the Governor’s official website where there’s the “Disclaimer: By signing the petition you are agreeing to receive updates from the State of New York.”
