Profile America: Mickey Mouse at 90

Saturday, November 24th. One of America’s most enduring popular entertainers and icons is celebrating his 90th birthday. Mickey Mouse appeared for the first time in 1928. The November release called “Steamboat Willie” was the first cartoon with synchronized music and sound effects.

Created by Walt Disney, who provided Mickey’s squeaky voice, the technical and artistic advance was a sensation of the day. Mickey has been busy ever since, along with his fellow cartoon characters, in what is now the huge and diversified Walt Disney company. Cartoons are still part of the big business of today’s motion picture and video production industries.

Nationwide, nearly 243,000 people are employed in over 14,000 production outfits.
