I feel the need to speak up and to speak out about Donald Trump’s executive Order that reopens churches.
I urge all pastors and leaders to think long and hard about re-opening the sanctuary for worship. The death rate has not flattened and the virus is still spreading at an alarming rate, particularly in communities of color. People, real people are dying! The best medical and scientific minds are telling us not to assemble in numbers of more than 10, to wear masks and gloves, and to maintain a social distance between us of 6 feet. When we go back to regular worship, we will go back to our regular ways of fellowship.
We are a people of faith, and…, we are a people of wisdom! Our God is able to do exceedingly and abundantly above all that we ask or think. However, needlessly exposing ourselves and/or congregants to the potential of infection would be the same as tempting God (Matthew 4:6-7 6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God). We know who we serve and His power, so there is no need to test it.
