Shortly after Governor Kathy Hochul took the oath of office to become New York’s 57th governor and first female governor, congratulations came in from leaders around the state. Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx) acknowledged Hochul as the state’s first woman to serve as governor. “From State Senate majority leader to state attorney general to vice president of the United States, we continue to see women rise through the ranks of government, and it is a welcome trend,” Heastie noted in a statement.

Gov. Hochul was sworn in by New York State Court of Appeals Chief Judge Janet DiFiore in a private ceremony at the New York State Capitol. Ex-governor Andrew Cuomo resigned office at midnight after Attorney General Letitia James’ report concluded he sexually harassed at least 11 women.

“Governor Kathy Hochul has served at every level of government and is a qualified and dedicated public servant. Over the course of her time in public service, she has visited every corner of this state and developed strong relationships with local representatives.

“My colleagues and I know that our state is facing many significant challenges, and we are prepared to partner with Governor Hochul in addressing them. We look forward to working with her to ensure our children can safely return to school, New Yorkers are able to stay in their homes, small businesses can thrive again, our work to end to the scourge of gun violence continues and to fight the resurgence of COVID-19 to finally put this pandemic behind us.

“We stand ready to work with Governor Hochul to continue moving New York forward.”

–Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie

“Today is a historic day for New Yorkers with the swearing in of our first female governor, Kathy Hochul. I congratulate Governor Hochul on this incredible accomplishment and wish her well in her new role building on the progress of our great state. I look forward to continuing to work with her and the entire incoming administration.”

Attorney General Letitia James

“With the swearing-in of Governor Hochul today, we will have our first female Governor in the history of New York State. I look forward to continuing the advancement of our borough with the Hon. Kathy Hochul. No stranger to The Bronx, she will lead us with sagacity. Upon taking office as Lieutenant Governor in 2015, she hit the ground running and learned of the needs of all 62 counties but knew The Bronx was unique. I congratulate her in her new role as Governor.”

– Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.

“It is with confidence and optimism for the future of New York that we welcome Governor Kathy Hochul as she takes over the executive office. Governor Hochul has made it abundantly clear that New York’s children are a priority, taking time during her transition to personally visit schools and discuss the critical needs of our students, families and educators in this uncertain time.

“Working collaboratively with the Governor, the Board and the Department will ensure students go back to school safely in the coming weeks and schools are prepared to respond to any health and safety concerns that may arise during the school year.

“We are committed to creating and sustaining safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environments for all students and are confident that Governor Hochul will be a strong partner in our efforts.”

–Chancellor Lester W. Young, Jr., The Board of Regents and State Education Commissioner Betty A. Rosa

Congratulations to our new Governor and Western New York native Kathy Hochul on her inauguration as New York’s 57th Governor, and the first female to hold the office in state history. I am looking forward to working with this new administration to try to improve the lives of New Yorkers all across the state.

Governor Hochul takes office in the face of many challenges. It is my hope that she will work with elected leaders in both parties to address pressing issues like the pandemic, rising crime, continued outmigration and other threats to the future of our state. Saving our state will require input from across the political spectrum, not just the most radical voices from one region of our state.

– Senate Republican Minority Leader Rob Ortt

We know that Governor Hochul is ready to lead our State in these tough and changing times. We have seen her work first  hand from Long Island, throughout NYC, in Westchester and upstate. She is well respected by our leadership and very familiar with the Chamber’s mission of championing small business, creating good jobs, promoting sensible economic development and supporting diversity in our local communities & workplaces.

– Mark Jaffe, Greater NY Chamber President and CEO

“The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce congratulates Governor Kathy Hochul for her historic accomplishment in becoming New York’s first female governor. The future holds enormous challenges for New York City in the continued fight against COVID-19, and on behalf of 62,000 small businesses and half of Brooklyn’s workforce, we pledge our full assistance to the governor in every way she believes it to be useful for rebuilding our economy. The many diverse businesses of Brooklyn, home to the largest number of minority and women-owned firms in NYC, are optimistic that a Hochul Administration will deliver the needed small business support to ensure an equitable recovery.
